Admiral Robert FitzRoy coined the word "forecast" in 1860 and popularized storm glasses by placing them in the hands of small fishing communities to help them stay ahead of the weather. Clear liquid means fair skies. Murky means rain is expected. Crystals at the top warn of an approaching storm. We paired it with one of our all-time favorites, the Galileo thermometer, which marks the indoor temperature by the lowest sphere still floating up top, a trick of buoyancy older than Ol' FitzRoy himself. Two instruments born centuries apart, both still running on nothing but physics. The original forecast, still hard at work, right where you can watch it.
