What is a Thermometer?

Oxford Languages definition:
ther·mom·e·ter /THərˈmämədər/

noun
an instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands and contracts in the tube with heating and cooling.

Capillary Thermometers

Our capillary thermometers, also known as tube thermometers, are simple devices that consist of a long, thin glass tube with a bulb on the bottom that contains a mercury-free liquid (often dyed red or blue); as the temperature changes, the liquid expands or contracts, causing the level in the tube to rise or fall. The temperature is read by observing the level of the liquid against a scale marked on the thermometer. Created in weather resistent materials our thermometers provide practical design.

Our dial thermometers feature two types of metal strips, referred to as bi-metallic. The two metals will react to the change in temperature at different rates, so as the temperature changes they will expand and contract, creating movement. This motion is then transmitted to the needle or pointer making it move across the face of the dial, in turn giving us a temperature reading. Available in a variety of styles and mounting options, they are a perfect addtion to your living space.

What is a Rain Gauge?

Oxford Languages definition:
rain•gauge /ˈrān ˌɡāj/

noun
a device for collecting and measuring the amount of rain which falls.

NOTE: An inch of rain is exactly that, water that is one inch deep. Per the USGS (United States Geological Studies) Rainfall Calculator, one inch of rainfall equals 6 gallons of water per square yard or 27,154 gallons of water per acre.

Analog rain gauges use a series of markings on a tube or receptical to indicate rain fall. These markings are scientifically calculated and spaced according to the gauges opening and surface area, you will often find that the markings will not match the dimensions of a standard ruler. With a vairety of styles to choose from we know you'll find the perfect addition for your outdoor living space.
